The Daily 5 is a reading and writing framework that we use in our classroom. This system of learning provides students with developmentally appropriate choices everyday and allows the teacher to meet with small groups for targeted guided instruction. Instruction will begin with the teacher leading a whole group lesson focused on a specific strategy or concept for reading/writing. Afterward, each student may choose from a variety of developmentally appropriate activities to complete by themselves or with a partner. The teacher will meet with small groups of 4 to 5 students during this time to provide specialized instruction that meets specific learning needs. The daily 5 structure allows students to have choice in their learning, which enhances their level of engagement, and also allows the teacher to differentiate instruction to target individual learning needs.
The Daily 3 is a math structure that we use in our classroom that provides the same great learning opportunities as the Daily 5. The class engages in whole group lessons and students are also provided developmentally appropriate choices for independent and partner work. The teacher also works with students in small groups to target individual learning needs.
